Micah recently went to some far off city in Texas to get a nice tan,
So he is no longer with us in XL. He actually took a pastoral
position at a church somewhere in Texas.

An emphasis
on Service
October 1, 2006
Join us for a chance to put faith into practice! God calls us
to be humble servants and we want to exercise that as we go up to
Silver Birch Ranch and work on the dish crew for a men's retreat. There
are pictures of that "dirty job" on our
picture page.
XL Youth Go To Silver Birch Ranch
July 29 - August 4, 2006
XL goes to camp each year. This
year we had a great time! God always uses camp to take us away
from our normal lives to focus on him. One person even
accepted Christ! We are already gearing up for camp this coming year
from July 21-27.

Mission 2006 Bogotá, Colombia
The Bogotá missions trip was a huge success, God worked in the lives
of everyone who went. To see a portion of what we did got to
the XL Youth Mission page.
So Why Do We Serve?
Consider the words of one of XL's
youth as he realizes, "I've learned a thing or two".
I've learned a thing or two

This past week XL went to the
Milwaukee Rescue Mission and served for three days. We spent the
morning and early afternoon of the first two days conducting PE
classes for summer school kids from troubled homes. Then we
spent the evenings doing food prep, serving, and cleanup for the
homeless guys. We also helped at an activity center called New
Beginnings. It is a place in a really rough neighborhood where
kids can come and hang out in a Christian environment. We played
basketball and pool with the guys and just spent time with them.
On the third day we took the kids on a field trip to Kohler
Andre. When we got back, we helped with the kitchen work again.
Then we helped out with Joyhouse, a program for abused moms and
their kids. We helped them build a craft.
I was expecting this week to be an
exciting time of service. I thought it would be fun to see God
use us to change lives. I was disappointed. I was thinking about
the kids and how the most likely forgot about us a day or two
after we left, and now someone else is there volunteering just
as we did. Next week no-one will remember them either, and
someone else will be there doing the same thing. The work is
still getting done, but it doesn't really matter who does it. It
made me wonder why God created "service". If that's all there is
to it, it doesn't seem worthwhile. I'm beginning to think that
God places a higher priority on the worker than He does on the
work itself. After all, he created the world with few words,
couldn't He accomplish whatever else He needs to get done? Why
does He even bother to use us when He knows we will mess up? He
could do it right the first time. The reason for service must
not lie in the work itself, but rather in the worker. Service is
simply a tool that God uses to develop my relationship with
Himself.
Isaiah 45:1-3 tells the story of Cyrus, the great king
and emperor, and the reason that God called him to serve. "This is what the Lord says to His
anointed, to Cyrus whose right hand I take hold of to subdue
nations before him and to strip kings of their armor, to open
doors before him so that gates will not be shut: 'I will go
before you and will level the mountains; I will break down gates
of bronze and cut through bars of iron. I will give you the
treasures of darkness, riches stored in secret places so that
you may know that I am the Lord, the God of Israel, who summons
you by name." Isaiah 45:1-3
Why did God do such marvelous
things? Why did God ask Cyrus to serve Him in this way? So that
Cyrus may know God and understand His power. Plain and simple,
and straight from God's word. I don't feel that this devalues
Christian service. It is important for our own growth that we
obey God when He asks us to do His will. All I've learned is
God's motive behind service.
Does the work need to be done?
Yes. Must I be the one to do it? Ideally. Can God do it without
me? Yes. Will I learn to love God more unless I do what He asks?
No. Therefore, service is a privilege. It is God's way of
molding us into what He wants us to be.
"Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the
author and perfector of our faith..." is the whole reason for
service.
